The design is beautiful, but I’m not quite sure of the practicality of the method… The tutorial could be used for any other printed document or just a desktop background! :)

Fix choked outlined vector type

Posted by admin on Mar 11, 2010 in Illustrator

This tip is for Illustrator CS2 and less, which don’t have the stroke outside option…

To avoid type that chokes between its stroke lines, try adding a stroke that is double the size you actually need.
If you want a 2-point stroke, change the stroke to 4 points.
Then, make a copy of your text and choose EDIT – PASTE IN FRONT.
Make sure that the stroke is NONE, and you’ll see a much more presentable outlined type.

Before, with a 6pts stroke

After, with a 12 pts stroke and a no-stroke black text on top

Reducing an image without loosing quality

Posted by admin on Dec 9, 2009 in Photoshop

If you have a large photo you need much smaller, here’s a helpful hint so you won’t loose so much definition and quality durong the process.

Open your image and just reduce it to half the size it is, as many times you need until you reach the desired size.
Lets say its 1600 by 1200 pixels large. Change the image size to 800 x 600 (IMAGE – IMAGE SIZE – don’t change the resolution. Only the size in pixels).
Reduce it in half again, to 400 x 300. You can do this another time to get a small thumbnail…

Nice tip for web graphics ;)

Modifying a star as you draw it

Posted by admin on Dec 9, 2009 in Illustrator

In Illustrator, you can change the number of points in the star by pressing the UP and DOWN arrow keys as you drag your cursor while drawing.

You can also change the length of the arms by holding down COMMAND (CTRL in Windows).
If you make them too long, a quick tap of the OPTION key (ALT key in Windows) will flatten the star to start over without ever releasing the mouse!

Reversing the direction of an Illustrator brush

Posted by admin on Dec 2, 2009 in Illustrator

Sometimes when you attach a brush to a path, it doesn’t apply in the direction that you expect it.

  • To remedy to similar situations, you can change the path direction of an OPEN path by selecting the path and then clicking at the end of the path with the pen tool
  • If you are not the one who created the original path and don’t know which is the starting point, try both points.
One won’t work, but the other will.

Have another tip for this problem? Please comment !
