This tip is for Illustrator CS2 and less, which don’t have the stroke outside option…
To avoid type that chokes between its stroke lines, try adding a stroke that is double the size you actually need.
If you want a 2-point stroke, change the stroke to 4 points.
Then, make a copy of your text and choose EDIT – PASTE IN FRONT.
Make sure that the stroke is NONE, and you’ll see a much more presentable outlined type.
Before, with a 6pts stroke

|
After, with a 12 pts stroke and a no-stroke black text on top

In Illustrator, you can change the number of points in the star by pressing the UP and DOWN arrow keys as you drag your cursor while drawing.
You can also change the length of the arms by holding down COMMAND (CTRL in Windows).
If you make them too long, a quick tap of the OPTION key (ALT key in Windows) will flatten the star to start over without ever releasing the mouse!

Sometimes when you attach a brush to a path, it doesn’t apply in the direction that you expect it.
- To remedy to similar situations, you can change the path direction of an OPEN path by selecting the path and then clicking at the end of the path with the pen tool
- If you are not the one who created the original path and don’t know which is the starting point, try both points.
One won’t work, but the other will.
